The Common goal vs. the Individual

Having arrived in Amsterdam from Peru, I recently drove the autobahn in Germany and witnessed a cultural phenomenon. Flying down the road at 150km an hour, we came upon some congestion and all traffic began to slow down. The trucks, all in the right hand lane, all but stopped while the cars maintained about 60km an hour in the left lane. In Peru, the rule of the road lies with the individual and the weaving and dodging of traffic as each car or truck acts as a single entity can easy be noted. Recently arrived from Peru, I was waiting for any number of the trucks to jump into the left lane and take on the Peruvian style of “single interested actions”. But there was no such action and all the trucks remained in the right lane. The cars continued at a relatively nice speed and we were out of the traffic in a matter of minutes. If it had been Peru, the trucks would have joined in finding the fastest route for themselves and a little traffic would indeed have turn into a real problem and a standstill for all vehicles. This stark contrast of countries allowed the example to be made of the difference between single interested actions repeated over and over in comparison to a greater interest action of the larger group. The contrast is repeated in nature from the power of a colony of ants, to globalization and the common stake all countries hold in sustainability. Question in point: where do your actions lie?
